Software allows users to do their jobs on their PC's the basics of an operating system and office applications are installed on most PC's and each one needs a licence, there are different licencing options depending on what software you use. Non business software should not be allowed on any machine

An up to date spreadsheet should be held onsite that lists all purchased software along with serial numbers and certificates that have been issued.

Most people will now be aware of the new microsoft genuine advantage program which checks the authenticity of microsoft applications on the PC before allowing new updates to download. Many software companies are adopting this apporach to try and stop illegal copies of their software from being used.

Even small businesses should proactively check their systems to see what software is in use and check that a licence is held
